The funeral services have been tentatively set for Brendan Looney, the local athlete and Naval Academy graduate who was killed in a helicopter crash this week in Afghanistan.
The service is planned for Thursday, Sept. 30 at St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church on New Hampshire Avenue in the White Oak area of Silver Spring, according to the Associated Press. A wake will be held at the church the evening before.
Looney, 29, was among nine killed in a crash on Tuesday. The cause of the crash has not been released but appeared to be accidental.
Looney was a star athlete at DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, where he played varsity baseball and football and helped the Stags football team to its 12th conference championship in 1998. At Navy, he switched to lacrosse and led the Midshipmen to the 2004 NCAA title game, where they fell to Syracuse University, 14-13.
