House and Senate Democrats took over their respective chambers Wednesday night, as lawmakers in both bodies made protest statements about gun control and rape.
Senate Democrats started early by launching a series of speeches about the need for new gun control laws in the wake of the Orlando massacre early Sunday.
Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., led the charge, and held the floor for the day and into the evening with the help of his Democratic colleagues.
The Senate had little on its agenda for the day anyway, but his “filibuster” helped bring attention to the Democratic push for a bill.
During the day, leaders from both parties in the Senate sat down to discuss a possible way forward on a bill.
Over in the House, Democrats used the evening hours to talk about the Stanford University rape case, and some Democrats were reading parts of a public statement written by the woman who was a victim of Brock Turner, the student who raped her.
