Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, who was recently chosen to be Donald Trump’s vice presidential running mate, is both unpopular and unknown.
According to a new Gallup poll released Monday, just 37 percent of U.S. voters rate him as an “excellent” or “pretty good” choice as Trump’s vice president.
Slightly more — 45 percent — rate him “only fair” or “poor.” Another 18 percent had no opinion of Pence.
Pence is not seen favorably or well known among registered voters, either.
Just 21 percent have a favorable opinion of him, compared to 18 percent who said unfavorable. The low numbers could be because 44 percent of registered voters said they have never even heard of him.
Things are a bit better when registered Republican voters are asked about Pence.
More than one-quarter (27 percent) call Pence an “excellent choice,” with 40 percent saying “pretty good.” However, 17 percent say Trump’s VP choice is “only fair” and 5 percent say “poor.” Thirteen percent had no opinion.
Roughly three-fourths (74 percent) said having Pence as his running mate will have no effect on their likelihood to vote for Trump in November. Gallup also found that 14 percent said it will make them more likely to vote for Trump and 10 percent said it will make them less likely.
The telephone poll was conducted from July 15-16 among 901 registered voters and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
