GOP Rep. Mo Brooks announces Alabama Senate run

GOP Rep. Mo Brooks on Monday announced his run for the Alabama Senate seat once held by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

“I am running for the United States Senate because America’s status as the greatest nation in world history is at risk, because Congress is failing the American people by not rising to the challenges America faces, and because I am the only candidate for the Senate who has a record of proven conservative leadership,” Brooks, who represents Alabama’s 5th Congressional District, said in a statement.

“We must remember and defend the foundational principles that have made us the greatest nation in world history,” he said. “That is exactly what I have done as a legislator, district attorney, county commissioner and Congressman. And that is exactly what I will do as the next United States Senator from the great state of Alabama!”

Brooks is expected to travel around the state and host press conferences in Huntsville, Birmingham, Montgomery and Mobile on Monday.

The Senate seat is held by Sen. Luther Strange, who is planning to run for seat. Former Gov. Robert Bentley appointed Strange to the Senate seat after Sessions became the attorney general in the Trump administration.

Former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore announced his plans to run for the Senate seat in April. Other Republicans who have announced their run in the GOP primary include Alabama state Rep. Ed Henry, Christian Coalition President Randy Brinson and businessman Dom Gentile.

The primaries will be held Aug. 15 and the special election will be held Dec. 12.
