A concert pianist turned himself in to South Carolina authorities after being accused of killing a local pet hospital staffer.
On Wednesday, the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office charged Zachary David Hughes, 29, with murder in connection to Christina Parcell’s death. Parcell was found dead at her home on Oct. 13 with “multiple” stab wounds, Sheriff Hobart Lewis said at a press conference Thursday. The sheriff’s office said it determined Hughes as the suspect from security footage of the neighborhood.
“During the course of the investigation, investigators obtained physical evidence, which tied Hughes to the murder, and yesterday afternoon, Hughes turned himself in to authorities at the Greenville County Law Enforcement Center,” the sheriff’s office told the Washington Examiner. “Hughes is currently in the Greenville County Detention Center on bond, facing charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.”

Hughes knew there was a warrant for his arrest when he turned himself in, and he has no criminal record, according to Lewis. It is unclear the connection between him and Parcell, but officials believe the alleged attack was “definitely targeted.”
Parcell has “a very young daughter” who is in safe condition, the sheriff’s office said, and the hospital where Parcell worked as a staffer mourned her death.
“We will all miss her more than words can express,” the Foothills Veterinary Hospital said on Oct. 15. “She was not just our co-worker but our dear friend as well.”

Hughes graduated from The Juilliard School, a school in New York City that specializes in performing arts. He has performed throughout the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Japan.
The investigation into Parcell’s death is still underway, the sheriff’s office told the Washington Examiner.
