Man tries to kill spider with lighter and causes 60-acre wildfire

A Utah man was arrested Monday after he tried to kill a spider with a lighter the day before and ended up causing a 60-acre wildfire.

“Suspect arrested in fire east of Springville. He told law enforcement he was using a lighter to burn a spider,” the Utah County Sheriff’s Office posted on Twitter.

The identity of the man has not been confirmed, but authorities recovered “drugs and paraphernalia” in his backpack, according to the post.

The blaze was fast-moving, according to a report.

No major damage or evacuations were reported as a result of the incident, but the incident did draw the attention of Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, a Republican.

“Um, don’t do drugs kids (and don’t start spiders on fire during a drought),” Cox tweeted.

The blaze was attended to by multiple departments, and helicopters were called in as the flames worked their way up a mountainside, officials said.

Why the man used the lighter to kill the spider is a matter of bewilderment for police, authorities said.

“We don’t know why he was doing that,” Sgt. Spencer Cannon said. “He has been arrested and is being booked into jail right now on a fire-related charge.”

The suspect is facing charges related to drug possession and reckless burning, the report noted.

“Not sure exactly why he felt the need to have to burn the spider, but you know, all the regret in the world doesn’t change the outcome based on whatever reason there was for him doing that,” Cannon said.
