The American Planning Association on Wednesday announced the country’s top 10 Great Neighborhoods, Great Streets, and Great Public Spaces for 2010.
Middleburg, Va., has one of the country’s top 10 greatest streets, while downtown Frederick, Md. made the list of top 10 greatest neighborhoods. The designations come through the organization’s national program, Great Places in America.
Middleburg’s Washington Street, formed as a major U.S. highway and the epicenter of commerce and entertainment in the historic town now successfully balances traffic and pedestrians “while holding onto its 18th century character,” the APA said. Meanwhile, Frederick’s downtown seamlessly blends old and new with 18th-, 19th- and 20th-century buildings that trace the city’s architectural development, the group said.
“These American Planning Association Great Places demonstrate the benefits of good planning and plan implementation, often over generations,” Paul Farmer, APA’s CEO, said in a news release.
