Following a racially motivated mass shooting at a church in Charleston, S.C., which claimed the lives of nine people, newsrooms everywhere rushed to make sense of the deadly event.
However, because the event unfolded late at night, many newspapers in the United States were slow to catch up, with many running front-page stories instead on Pope Francis’ newly released environmental encyclical “Laudato Sii.”
But not all newsrooms were behind. Here’s how six major papers in the United States covered news of Wednesday’s deadly shooting (courtesy the Newseum):
1. New York Daily News

2. Denver Post

3. Boston Herald

4. Philly Inquirer

5. S.C. Post and Courier

6. Seattle Times

In contrast to newspapers’ lagging coverage, online news sites were on the story immediately, with groups from Yahoo! to the Huffington Post aggressively attacking the story with breaking details and updates.
Here’s what online news coverage looked like shortly after the alleged shooter, Dylann Storm Roof, 21, was apprehended Thursday by authorities in South Carolina.
