Kari Lake and ‘MAGA’ Republicans mock Liz Cheney for saying she may campaign for Democrats

A host of pro-Trump Republicans mocked Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) after the critic of the former president revealed she would consider campaigning for Democrats in 2024.

Cheney, who has vowed to leave the Republican Party after she was defeated in her primary last month, pledged to fight against election deniers such as Republican Arizona gubernatorial contender Kari Lake.

“I’m going to make sure Donald Trump … make sure he’s not the nominee, and if he is the nominee, I won’t be a Republican,” Cheney proclaimed at the Texas Tribune Festival on Saturday.

The Wyoming congresswoman also threw shade at Republicans, such as Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who have refrained from election denial themselves but have backed other Republicans who question the legitimacy of the 2020 election.

“He’s demonstrated that he’s somebody who has not bought into the toxin of Donald Trump — but he campaigned recently for Kari Lake, who’s an election denier, who is dangerous,” Cheney added. “I’m going to do everything I can to make sure that Kari Lake is not elected.”

In response, Lake harped on the prospects of Cheney leaving the GOP, contending that she “probably should change her voter registration” before praising Cheney’s remarks as a gift to her.

“That might be the biggest, best gift I’ve ever received. I mean, the people of Wyoming can’t stand her. I’m pretty much sure that the people of Arizona don’t like Liz Cheney,” Lake quipped to Fox News on Sunday.

After winning a narrow primary race over Karrin Taylor Robson, who was backed by Gov. Doug Ducey and former Vice President Mike Pence, Lake will face Katie Hobbs in November. She holds a razor-thin, 0.5-point edge against her Democratic rival, according to the latest Real Clear Politics polling aggregate.

Other Trump-aligned Republicans similarly piled on.

“Liz Cheney gets crushed in her ‘home’ Wyoming by 40+ points … But now we are supposed to believe she has the juice to take on @KariLake,” frequent Cheney critic Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) tweeted.

“In 2020, when Liz Cheney was the GOP House conference chair, she backed my primary opponent. I won that race 81% to 19%,” Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) tweeted.

Not all of the reactions to Cheney’s remarks came from detractors.

“Welcome to the club @Liz_Cheney. Help us former R’s defend democracy by defeating not just Kari Lake, but also JD Vance, Doug Mastriano, Ron Johnson, Herschel Walker, Blake Masters, Ron DeSantis, etc, etc. Right now, Liz, the entire party is a threat. They ALL must be defeated,” tweeted former Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL), who has since left the GOP.

“Liz Cheney’s principles, from Wyoming, our neighboring state to the north, is inspiring. Lauren Boebert has no such principles. Help me defeat Boebert in November and bring principles back to Washington,” said Colorado Democratic congressional contender Adam Frisch, who is challenging Rep. Boebert (R-CO) in the midterm elections.

Prior to crossing Trump and drawing ire from conservatives with her public remarks following the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, Cheney had been a political scion who rapidly ascended the political ranks in Washington, D.C. She quickly became the No. 3 Republican in the House as the chairwoman of the House Republican Conference before falling victim to a political mutiny that forced her from her post.

Last month, she was bested by Trump-backed Harriet Hageman in one of the most high-profile incumbent losses of the midterm cycle. Most other House Republicans, such as Cheney, who backed the impeachment of Trump have either lost their primaries or declined to run.

Cheney is the vice chairwoman of the Jan. 6 committee, which is slated to host a public hearing on Sept. 28.
