Less than a year after Kim Kardashian West pushed President Trump to grant Alice Marie Johnson clemency, the reality TV queen has helped free more than a dozen other inmates.
Kardashian West, who recently revealed in a Vogue profile that she was studying to become a lawyer, has been quietly working to help commute the sentences of 17 other inmates, CNN reported Tuesday.
Like Johnson, the 17 people were first-time nonviolent drug offenders.
“[Kim] has provided financial support to cover legal fees so that we can travel the country. Our relationships with our clients don’t end when they are freed. [Kim] is truly dedicated to the issue. I work personally with her, we are really grateful,” Kardashian West’s attorney Brittany K. Barnett said in a statement.
MiAngel Cody, the lead counsel of the Decarceration Collective, said Kardashian West has also helped foot the bill to transport those released from prison home.
Kardashian West has chosen not to publicize the releases on social media because she’s been “busy,” according to Barnett.
“[Kim] has been on the phone as we’ve told clients they are coming home,” Barnett said. “I think, one, she really wants to be taken seriously, so she is really focused on learning the system and the people who are directly impacted. That takes a lot of focus, too. It’s not always amplified with social media.”
