Accused cop killer charged in 2 more cases

Already charged with killing Detective Troy Chesley in January, 21-year-old Brandon Grimes has since been charged in two additional crimes, both attempted first-degree murders.

Grimes shot Charles Bradley, 20, in the arm on Nov. 24, according to city police, who say evidence shows the gun used to shoot Chesley was also used to shoot Bradley.

Detectives also charged Grimes with 10 counts stemming from the Jan. 5 attack on Donta Robinson, during which Grimes pointed a gun at Robinson?s head and took Robinson?s car, wallet, watch and video camera, charging documents say.

After Grimes was charged in Chesley?s death, Robinson told police he saw the man who robbed him on television, according to court records.

“Robinson positively identified his robber as the man shown on television and in the newspapers who had murdered the policeman,” Detective Joshua Ellsworth wrote in his application for charges.

Grimes faces life sentences if convicted of those crimes.

Under Maryland law, Grimes is eligible for the death penalty if convicted of Chesley?s killing.

Chesley?s death rocked the city of Baltimore earlier this year.

The 34-year-old officer had just left duty early on the morning of Jan. 9 and was slipping a key in his front door when he was shot, according to court documents. Chesley returned fire, and police tracked down Grimes within hours at St. Agnes Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment for a gunshot wound.

The public defender?s office won a gag order in court banning police and attorneys from publicly commenting on the case.

Police said that when Grimes was arrested in connection with the killing he already had 17 prior arrests.

At Chesley?s funeral, Gov. Martin O?Malley decried Grimes? history.

Counting off Grimes? arrests one by one, O?Malley said “it is not right” that someone with such a past “should be allowed to take” an officer?s life.
