UK targets Russian-backed media in new batch of sanctions

The United Kingdom announced a new round of sanctions Thursday targeting Russian state media and “propagandists.”

The 14 new sanctions target Russian propagandist Sergey Brilev, Russian-backed TV-Novosti, which owns RT, among others, in an attempt to crack down on disinformation as Russia’s invasion into Ukraine enters its second month, U.K. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss announced in a press release.

Putin’s war on Ukraine is based on a torrent of lies. Britain has helped lead the world in exposing Kremlin disinformation, and this latest batch of sanctions hits the shameless propagandists who push out Putin’s fake news and narratives,” Truss said.

Brilev, a television anchor on Russian state-owned media Rossiya who previously resided in the U.K., will no longer have access to his assets or business dealings in the country.

Several heads of Russian state media — including Chief Executive Officer of Gazprom-Media Aleksandr Zharov, Managing Director of RT Alexey Nikolov, and Head of Sputnik International Broadcasting Anton Anisimov — are also on the sanction list.

The U.K. said the sanctions would help “ensure” Russian state media would not filter back into televisions in the country.

The U.K. is also fast-tracking sanctions for seven individuals connected to the Strategic Culture Foundation, which the British government accused of spreading false information about the invasion in Ukraine.

The new round of sanctions is part of a mounting international effort to cut off Russian oligarchs, banks, and businesses from the rest of the world.
