Two Connecticut police officers killed and third seriously wounded in ambush

Two Bristol, Connecticut, police officers have been killed in the line of duty, while a third was seriously wounded.

The officers were answering a possible domestic disturbance call between siblings late Wednesday night, according to Connecticut State Police Sgt. Christine Jeltema.

State police later said in a statement that it appeared to be “a deliberate act to lure law enforcement to the scene.”

“When officers arrived, they were immediately met with a suspect,” she said. “Shots were fired, fatally wounding one officer on scene.”

A second officer was later pronounced dead at the hospital, while a third had serious injuries.

The suspect was shot and killed at the scene, while his brother was wounded and taken to the hospital.

Jeltema said it was an “isolated incident.”

Officer Alex Hamzy, 34, worked in the patrol division since 2014 and worked as a cadet adviser. He leaves behind a wife.

Officer Alec Iurato, 26, is recovering from surgery related to the attack. He has been released from a local hospital.

“Sadly, we lost two exceptional Bristol police officers, and a third was seriously injured as a result of senseless violence,” Gould told reporters.

“Our community has been rocked. Our police department has been rocked,” Gould added. “To our community, we value our partnership. We need your support. We need your thoughts. We need your prayers.”
