Nonprofit organizations in the Baltimore region may apply for grants from the Department of Homeland Security to secure high-risk facilities against terrorist attacks. A total of $24 million is available nationwide.
Applications for the grant program must be submitted through the Baltimore Urban Area Work Group, an organization composed of emergency management officials from the Baltimore Metropolitan Council?s member jurisdictions, including the cities of Baltimore and Annapolis, and Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford and Howard counties.
Eligible enhancements include closed-circuit television systems for perimeters of community facilities; vehicle barriers, lighting and fencing for perimeter security; and personal identification systems to limit unauthorized access to facilities.
Grant applications must be received by the Baltimore Urban Area Work Group by June 11. After local review, the applications will be forwarded to the Department of Homeland Security for final determination. The grant application is available online or by calling a Homeland Security official in one ofthe participating jurisdictions.
