Young girl left in car dies after powerful winds force tree down on vehicle

A young girl in Maine died Thursday after a tree fell on her while severe storms blew through the state.

The 9-year-old child was in a car when the tree fell onto the top of the vehicle at Sebago Lake Campground, according to a report.

She became trapped inside the car and was pronounced dead by authorities who arrived on the scene, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said.

The 9-year-old’s family was reportedly at the campgrounds when the incident took place.

The weather was extreme for Mainers Thursday. Not only were trees knocked over, but well-entrenched utility poles were also leveled. Winds were estimated at 70 mph.

“For the family left behind to grieve this unimaginable loss, words cannot describe the devastation of losing a child,” the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “The public safety community offers its heart-felt condolences.”
