Hillary Clinton used a Thursday meeting with family members of gun violence victims in Connecticut to claim that the gun lobby is the most powerful lobby there is in Washington.
“You can talk about Wall Street, drug companies, insurance companies, big oil,” Clinton said, referring to Bernie Sanders, who has raised all of those lobbies in his run against her. “But nobody is more powerful than the gun lobby.”
The former secretary of state went on to pledge that if elected, she would use “every minute of every day” to look for ways to “save lives to improve gun culture.”
During the campaign, gun control has been the one issue on which Clinton stands to the left of Sanders, and she’s promised to push for regulations that make gun manufacturers responsible for gun violence. Most recently, Clinton has repeatedly criticized Sanders for not agreeing with family members of Sandy Hook victims who want to take gun manufacturers to court.
“We know that there has been a concerted effort to try and undermine the real life experiences of people who speak out, blame the victim, blame the victim’s mother, blame the victim’s family, blame the victim’s neighborhood, find somebody to blame instead of saying we have too many guns in this country and we have to address it,” Clinton said, highlighting the efforts by some to undermine victims.
With 55 delegates at stake, Connecticut votes on April 26 and Clinton leads Sanders by a relatively slim margin, 50-42. In the primary thus far, Sanders has done well in New England states near his home of Vermont.
