California Rep. Devin Nunes won reelection to his seat in the state’s 22nd Congressional District.
The call was made by the Associated Press on Wednesday.
Nunes, a staunch ally of President Trump during his first term, won with 53.5% of the vote in his district with 100% reporting. Nunes has occupied the seat since 2003, consistently winning by large margins.
However, his alliance with the president prompted a well-funded, formidable challenge from Democrat Phil Arballo. The race between the two was too close to be called as of Tuesday night, as mail-in ballots have proved to give some Democrats turnout advantages in early voting.
As the top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, Nunes has been a lead investigator in the “Russiagate” controversy, and as such, a prime target of criticism by Democrats.
Democrats managed to keep their majority in the House, though Republicans did outperform polls and reclaim seats they lost in the 2018 midterm election. Republicans are also on track to keep their majority in the Senate. The winner of the presidential election remains unknown as of Wednesday afternoon,
