As Disney faces backlash from conservatives for being too “woke,” the company has hired a new top spokeswoman to help quell the controversy: a Hillary Clinton alumna.
The company announced on Tuesday that Kristina Schake will take the reins as the company’s executive vice president of global communications effective immediately. In addition to the Clinton campaign, she also served in both the Biden and Obama administrations.

“As Disney approaches its 100th anniversary, I’m excited to lead the company’s global communications work at this pivotal moment of growth and transformation. The magical stories and experiences Disney creates enrich the lives of countless people around the world and it’s an honor for me to be a part of that,” she said in a statement.
Disney has been embroiled in controversy over Florida’s Parental Rights in Education Act, which critics have labeled the “Don’t Say Gay” bill. The legislation puts limits on classroom discussion about sexual orientation and gender identity up until the third grade. Critics argue the bill will harm members of the LGBT community by forcing classrooms to steer clear of relevant issues, while supporters contend the bill is safeguarding parental rights.
Initially, Disney CEO Bob Chapek attempted to steer the company clear of political spats. But internal pressure pushed him to reverse course and state his opposition to the legislation. When the bill became law, Disney pledged to fight to repeal the law, drawing ire from conservatives.
Geoff Morrell, the chief corporate affairs officer at Disney, said Schake will serve as the lead spokeswoman for the company and help with communications strategy. He contended that her political connections will be a valuable asset to the company.
“Her experience in the public and private sectors, in political and corporate campaigns, make her ideally suited for this important role,” he said. “Together with the exceptional professionals at Disney, we will help the world’s greatest storytelling company engage even more effectively with our many stakeholders around the world.”

Schake recently served as the head of President Joe Biden’s nationwide COVID-19 vaccine education campaign before departing late last year. She served as the deputy communications director for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign and as a special assistant to the president and communications director to the first lady in the Obama administration.
In 2013, she co-founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which advocated the legalization of same-sex marriage. Between Clinton’s election loss and the dawn of the Biden administration, Schake served as the global communications director for Instagram.
