John Kennedy announces reelection bid

Sen. John Kennedy would “rather drink weedkiller” than “let you down,” he said in a video announcing his 2022 reelection campaign.

The Louisiana Republican, first elected in 2016, said that while “we’ve accomplished a lot” during his term in office, “now the socialists are racing to undo it all,” a threat prompting him to declare, “My job, our job, isn’t finished.”

“I promise that come hell or high water, your values will be my values,” he said, adding that he would “never be silenced, never, when the nut jobs tell me to sit down and shut up.”

Having aligned himself closely with former President Donald Trump, Kennedy said he promised in his 2016 campaign “to put our country back on track and to make America great again,” a reference to the former president’s campaign slogan. Trump endorsed Kennedy several months prior to his reelection bid announcement.

“John Kennedy of the Great State of Louisiana is a spectacular Senator and person,” Trump said in a statement on March 4. “He is a tireless advocate for the people of his State, and stands strongly with the forgotten men and women of our Country. Strong on Energy Independence, the Military, our great Vets and the Border, John has my Complete and Total Endorsement!”

Kennedy was one of the few senators who voted to object to President Joe Biden‘s electors prior to his January inauguration, and he joined most of his Republican colleagues in voting to acquit Trump in his second impeachment trial for “incitement of insurrection” in connection to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. He also voted “not guilty” on both Ukraine-related charges during Trump’s first impeachment trial in 2019. Trump was acquitted of all charges in both trials.

Louisiana’s Senate race is considered a safe Republican seat, according to most political pollsters. Kennedy won the election to his seat in 2016 by a tally of 61% to 39%.
