Gray creates panel to help pick schools chancellor

Mayor Vince Gray said Tuesday that he is creating a panel composed of teachers and teachers union representatives, students and community members to help select the next D.C. schools chancellor.

Chancellor Michelle Rhee stepped down in the fall and the job has been filled on an interim basis by Rhee’s former second-in-command Kaya Henderson through the end of the school year.

Gray said Tuesday he’s not yet sure how big of a role the panel will play in selecting the next chancellor, but at the very least it will serve to advise his decision.

He also said he expects the process to move quickly. “I don’t think this begins a protracted process,” Gray said.

He will announce the panel members next week.
