A Republican elector from Texas wrote Monday that he will not cast his vote for President-elect Donald Trump.
“Fifteen years ago, I swore an oath to defend my country and Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic,” wrote Christopher Suprun in a New York Times opinion piece. “On Dec. 19, I will do it again.”
Suprun, a paramedic, was a firefighter during the Sept. 11 terror attacks. He will cast his vote with the 537 other electors on Dec. 19 as part of the Electoral College process.
Trump has showed the nation “again and again” that he is not qualified to be president because he “chooses to stoke fear and create outrage,” according to Suprun.
He says he believes that electors should instead unify behind a Republican alternative such as Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who ran against Trump in the Republican primary.
“Presidential electors have the legal right and a constitutional duty to vote their conscience,” Suprun writes. “I pray my fellow electors will do their job and join with me in discovering who that person should be.”
