Rex Tillerson Denies He Considered Quitting in July

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson Wednesday denied an NBC report that claimed he angrily considered quitting the administration in July before being dissuaded by Vice President Mike Pence.

From NBC’s report:

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was on the verge of resigning this past summer amid mounting policy disputes and clashes with the White House, according to senior administration officials who were aware of the situation at the time. The tensions came to a head around the time President Donald Trump delivered a politicized speech in late July to the Boy Scouts of America, an organization Tillerson once led, the officials said.

In an impromptu Wednesday statement to the press, Tillerson denied that he had considered resigning:

“The vice president has never had to persuade me to remain as secretary of state because I have never considered leaving this post,” Tillerson said.

The NBC report also claimed that Tillerson had called Trump a “f—-king moron.” Tillerson did not deny the name-calling, saying simply that “We don’t deal with that kind of petty nonsense.”

The story did not escape the notice of the president, who took to Twitter to denounce the story.

Over the weekend, after Tillerson said he was trying to establish a dialogue with North Korea, Trump said that Tillerson was “wasting his time.”
