Locals pick Broening Avenue port project?s name

Duke Realty Corp., a Baltimore-based development company, announced last week that, with the help of local residents, it will name its new Broening Avenue project the Chesapeake Commerce Center.

During the company?s “Partners & Neighbors: A Naming Brainstorm” campaign, nearly 200 name ideas were submitted.

“It became clear very quickly that this place is meaningful to all, that there are thousands of stories ? of jobs, friendships, families and life ? to be celebrated,” said John Macsherry, Duke?s vice president of development and leasing, in a statement. “In the end, the name we selected ? Chesapeake Commerce Center ? was, appropriately enough, inspired by not one, but by a number of local residents.”

The 2.8 million-square-foot former General Motors plant is being redeveloped into 16 separate buildings that will be primarily used for port-related business.
