Christie cools off: ‘Last night was interesting, huh?’

BEACHWOOD, Ohio — After slamming Ted Cruz late Wednesday night over his refusal to endorse Donald Trump, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie shifted his focus Thursday morning to the man who beat him for the vice presidential position.

“Well last night was interesting, huh?” Christie asked his home state’s delegation at a breakfast on the fourth and final day of the GOP convention. “Vice presidential nominee Pence really showed the American people last night who he is, what his values are.”

“He’s a good guy,” Christie said of Mike Pence, who delivered his first major speech as the Republican vice presidential candidate Wednesday evening.

“This is a guy who has steady judgment, real wisdom, understands friendship, understands loyalty and understands how to lead,” he added. “I think he’ll serve Donald extraordinarily well in the campaign and he’ll serve our country well as vice president, and I think everyone got a window into that last night.”

Christie, who called Cruz “selfish” during a CNN interview just hours earlier, said the Texas senator’s convention speech was nothing but a demonstration of “who he is.” Despite previously describing Cruz’s speech as “awful,” the Garden State governor praised Trump for allowing him to deliver it.

“Trump said the guy worked hard [and] he earned a right to have a platform, to speak on. That was a smart thing to do,” Christie said.
