President Joe Biden slipped in a reference to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s leaked recording during a speech in Washington state about Earth Day.
McCarthy has come under fire for leaked audio of comments he made saying he would urge former President Donald Trump to resign after the Capitol riot.

“This ain’t your father’s Republican Party,” Biden said during a speech that otherwise focused on rainforests and gas mileage requirements. “All you’ve got to do is look at what’s being played this morning about the tape that was released. Anyway, all kidding aside, this is the MAGA party now.”
The recording is of McCarthy telling a group of Republicans on Jan. 10, 2021, that he would recommend Trump resign from the presidency after the events at the Capitol. It was played during the Rachel Maddow Show on Thursday evening. McCarthy has previously denied that he said this.
“I’m seriously thinking of having that conversation with him tonight. I haven’t talked to him in a couple of days,” McCarthy said in response to a question from Republican Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming about whether Trump might resign as the impeachment resolution was set to pass.

“The only discussion I would have with him is that I think this will pass, and it would be my recommendation you should resign,” McCarthy said in the recording.
“I’ve had it with this guy. What he did was unacceptable. Nobody can defend that, and nobody should defend it,” he added near the end of the conversation.
House Republicans appear to be in wait-and-see mode over the incident, with McCarthy claiming Trump is not angry about the incident.
