Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., is supporting incumbent New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is facing actress Cynthia Nixon in the Democratic primary.
“Kirsten is a friend of Governor Cuomo’s and supports his campaign,” said Gillibrand spokesman Glen Caplin, according to New York Daily News. “He’s been a leader on issues she cares deeply about like marriage equality, paid family leave and campus sexual assault to name a few.”
“She believes he deserves to be re-elected,” he added.
The endorsement comes after intense speculation over who Gillibrand would back, since Gillibrand’s Off the Sidelines political action committee has raised $6.5 million to support female candidates in the U.S.
Nixon, best known for her role as Miranda in the HBO show “Sex and the City,” announced Monday she would be challenging Cuomo in the primary in September.
