Stepping away from the crowd

All Saab, all the time.

That?s what sets Saab of Baltimore apart from its competition, General Sales Manager Brian Peat said.

“The people on our staff are Saab enthusiasts,” Peat said. “The people here know what Saab is about and want them.”

The dealership, opened in May 1999, is a single-point Saab dealer. They only sell Saab products except for a few pre-owned cars from other automakers. The dealership provides full service to customers, including searching out particular used cars for clients.

Dealer Jenny Trostel, who bought the dealership from her partners in October 2005, sets a team-based atmosphere that prompts employees to work as a team to satisfy clients.

“This is a great atmosphere,” said salesman John Kallok, who joined the dealership about 3.5 years ago. “You hear a lot of horror stories about car dealerships. It?s not like that here. We work together as a team.”

That includes working hard toensure that work is fairly divided. Sales commissions go to the proper salesperson and staff backs each other up.

“We will call each other if someone is off and a customer comes in,” he said. “We cover each other. It?s a great place to work.”

The dealership staff work under the premise that they help people buy the cars they want, they don?t sell people cars, Peat said. Customers respond well to that atmosphere, and it brings them back to the dealership again and again, he said.

“Our customers are happy with the way we do business,” Peat said. “We try to work with them to determine what cars will suit their needs. We never leave stones unturned. We want them to feel they made the right decision on the car they buy. We don?t try to think for customers ? we want to supply the information they need.”

One example, Peat said, is a recent customer who wanted to trade in a two-year-old Saab. She declined a test drive until staff reminded her that the car had changed ? in styling, horsepower and other ways within the two years.

“We want to involve the customer,” he said. “We don?t try to process the information for them.”
