Clinton team responds to Giuliani saying she wasn’t in NYC on 9/11

Hillary Clinton’s campaign responded Wednesday to suggestions she wasn’t really there for New York City on 9/11 by noting she used her position as as an Empire State senator to secure benefits and aid for the city while GOP nominee Donald Trump pocketed relief funds.

“In 2001, Hillary worked to support and rebuild New York after 9/11. Trump pocketed emergency funds for himself,” her team said on her official Twitter account.

The Democratic nominee’s website also claimed, “Two days after 9/11, Hillary personally met with President Bush to secure a commitment of $20 billion to rebuild New York.”

In contrast, it added, Trump only worried about himself.

“Two days after 9/11, Trump said his buildings weren’t affected. But he later got $150,000 in taxpayer dollars intended for small businesses to recover after 9/11. He also touts that he now has the tallest building in New York City,” Clinton’s website claimed.

The response from the Democratic nominee comes after former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, a major Trump surrogate, said Wednesday that he didn’t remember seeing Clinton in the city on Sept. 11, 2001.

“Don’t tell me if you said that you remember Sept. 11, 2001,” Giuliani said at a campaign event Wednesday in Ocala, Fla. “I remember Sept. 11, 2001.”

“Yes, you helped to get benefits for the people who were injured that day,” the former mayor continued, addressing Clinton. “But I heard her say she was there that day. I was there that day, I don’t remember seeing Hillary Clinton there. That was like when she said she had to run through gunfire. That turned out to be — what do we call it? — a lie.”

“But don’t tell me that you subscribe to the notion that all of us were [in New York City] on Sept. 11 and we’re lucky to be alive and have lost so many friends. I lost so many friends on Sept. 11. I think about it every day. Don’t tell me you belong to our very, very tight group of ‘never forget.’ Don’t tell me that,” Giuliani said.

Hillary Clinton was in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 11, as Congress was in session that day. She then joined Giuliani on Sept. 12 for a tour of the damage from the attacks.
