A conservative group plans to spend almost $100,000 on Twitter and Facebook ads Thursday attacking a top Democratic donor during the final days of the party’s convention.
America Rising Squared, the policy arm of the America Rising Political Action Committee, plans to hit environmentalist billionaire Tom Steyer on Thursday with a new web ad and a Snapchat filter, a small graphic showing a caricature of Steyer that people can overlay onto pictures they take on their phones.
The video focuses on Steyer’s past history of investing in fossil fuels while trying to steer environmental policy toward his current investments.
“But, Steyer made his fortune by investing hundreds of millions of dollars in coal projects for countries like China, India, and Indonesia,” the narrator in the video states. “Rather than investing in American jobs, Steyer bet against America and bankrolled foreign countries with lax environmental standards.”
“Billionaire Tom Steyer: More money for him, a worse environment for the world, fewer jobs for America.”
The Snapchat filter designed by AR Squared accuses Steyer of dividing Democrats by being one of the big-money donors that insurgent Sen. Bernie Sanders railed against during his campaign.
On Thursday, the group will make the Snapchat filter available on people’s phones who are near the California delegation’s hotel, which is where Steyer is scheduled to speak on Thursday. Steyer has reportedly been considering running for governor of the nation’s most populous state in 2018.
“Whether it’s the fortune he made investing in fossil fuels in China and India or purchasing influence with massive political donations or his job-killing agenda strongly opposed by organized labor, Democrats deserve to know all the facts about Tom Steyer before he tries to buy his way into office as early as next year,” said Jeremy Adler, communications director at AR Squared.
“We’re pleased to help lift the veil on Steyer’s act and expose his true motives to the delegates in Philadelphia this week.”
