Don?t go insane. Therapy ? lots of it ? is on its way.
“Six Psychiatrists and Dr. Phil” debuts at Notre Dame College at 8 p.m. The play, written by Notre Dame junior Jacky Bosworth, follows a day in the life of a psychiatric office. “It starts with each psychiatrist having a session with their patients, and then the majority of the second act is the doctors discussing what a crazy day they had,” Bosworth said.
The plot was born out of one playwriting class. “One of our assignments was to write a 10-minute play, and everyone ended up bringing in these scenes that had a patient and psychiatrist,” said Bosworth. Knowing that they had to perform the scenes in front of an audience at the end of the class, the professor became panicky that the scenes would all look the same. “I suggested that we put them all together into one basic format,” Bosworth said. “And I ended up writing a clincher play, which became my second act.”
After the class, Bosworth, who is majoring in English, took all of the scenes and rewrote them into a two-act play which eventually became “Six Psychiatrists and Dr. Phil.”
“It?s just absolutely hysterical; it?s an easygoing night at the theatre,” said director Katie Meyer, who is a senior and drama major at Notre Dame.
Bosworth is currently enrolled in her second playwriting class and working on her second play.
