Trump botches Customs and Border Protection acronym eight times at event honoring the agency

President Trump made his strongest show of support Monday for the nearly 60,000 law enforcement officers that make up the Department of Homeland Security’s U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency.

But eight times during his 30-minute speech, Trump, who appeared to be reading from a teleprompter, mistakenly said “CBC” instead of “CBP.” In fact, the president did not state “CBP” once during his remarks.

Below are the eight occasions he stated CBC:

1. “We’re here today to salute the incredibly brave patriots who keep America safe. The heroes of ICE and CBC. To everyone here today from Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Customs and Border Protection, I want to let you now we love you, we support you, we will always have your back.”

2. “I want to thank a true and loyal friend of ICE and CBC. … Our wonderful vice president, Mike Pence.”

3. “Most importantly, let me extend my gratitude to every law enforcement professional representing ICE and CBC, enforcement and removal operations, homeland security investigations, ICE prosecutors, the office of field operations, air and marine operations, and Border Patrol.”

4. “Over the last year — some incredible numbers — ICE and CBC seized more than 2.8 million pounds of illicit and deadly narcotics. Lot of people would have died.”

5. “Every day on average CBC prevents 10 known or suspected terrorists from entering the United States.”

6. “Just this past month, CBC officers at a single port of entry discovered more than 30,000 fentanyl pills, 62 pounds of meth — that’s a lot — and 11 pounds of heroin.”

7. “Today, I sent a letter to state and local leaders across our nation, asking them to pledge their full support and cooperation with the officers and agents of ICE and CBC.”

8. “The extremists who attack ICE and CBC like to portray themselves as champions of social justice. They are not.”

The White House, DHS, and CBP did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
