A former congressman who has acted for more than two decades as a top GOP power broker is threatening to leave the Republican Party if Donald Trump defeats Hillary Clinton in November.
“I don’t know how the Republican Party survives if Trump becomes president,” former Minnesota congressman Vin Weber said in a Wednesday interview. He added that a Trump victory would leave “the world political order, the world economic order and the Republican Party … all in shambles.”

Weber served in the House from 1980-92 and has worked as an advisor to a number of Republican presidential candidates since that time including Bob Dole, John McCain, Mitt Romney, and Jeb Bush. He currently works as a lobbyist in Washington, though as a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and occasional attendee of the European Bilderberg conference, he has also been tied to political leaders around the globe.
Weber said that he wasn’t quite sure whether he would vote for Clinton, but added that Trump poses such a threat to the world political order that it could result in violent conflict if he is elected. “I can’t imagine I’d remain a Republican if he becomes president … I would applaud if other Republican leaders reject him.”
