House Republicans want the truth about President Obama’s decision to reject the Keystone XL pipeline last year, and they are ready to subpoena high-ranking Cabinet officials to do so.
House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, threatened Secretary of State John Kerry with a subpoena if he does not voluntarily turn over the documents related to the decision by next week.
Chaffetz and Rep. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo., who heads a subcommittee, sent a letter to Kerry earlier this week stating that the State Department continues to backpedal and most recently told the committee it will not cooperate. Chaffetz first requested the documents in February.
“Weeks after asserting the production was forthcoming, the department now states that it will not fully comply, and has failed to state any valid objection for doing so,” said the letter sent May 31. The letter was released on Friday.
“Give the department’s ongoing failure to fulfill this request, the committee is left with no choice but to consider use of the compulsory process if a complete set of requested documents is not received by June 7, 2016,” the letter adds.
