Agencies ban campfires in southern New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Federal agencies in southern New Mexico are banning campfires and limiting smoking starting Friday due to hot and dry weather conditions and extreme fire danger.

All lands on the Lincoln National Forest, those managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the Bitter Lakes National Wildlife Refuge are banning campfires.

Smoking in these areas is also limited to enclosed vehicles and buildings.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park is restricting smoking to enclosed vehicles and prohibiting grills in the Rattlesnake Spring area.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park has restricted smoking to vehicles and hard surfaces.

Officials say the restrictions will be in effect indefinitely.
