Sunny Hostin called the Democratic candidate for Senate in Pennsylvania, Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, “incredibly courageous and brave” on The View Friday for debating his opponent, Republican candidate Dr. Mehmet Oz.
The appearance took place only days ahead of the midterm elections. Fetterman appeared by video chat, and the show disclosed that he was using closed captioning to assist with his auditory and word processing issues, brought on by his recent stroke.
“I think you look and sound great,” Hostin said, referencing criticisms Fetterman faced after his debate with Oz, in which he appeared to struggle with his words and was delayed in answering questions.
“It’s clear your post-stroke troubles are not cognitive and would not hinder you as a senator,” Sara Haines chimed in.

Asked about the opinions of his medical team, he told the hosts, “I continue to get better and better.”
“Both our doctors believe that we’re fit to serve,” he added. “We have been very transparent in all of our doctors’ beliefs.”
“I really believe that it certainly wasn’t an even event for me,” Fetterman said of the recent debate.
Pressed on inflation by Alyssa Farah Griffin, he explained that it is “critical that we step up and fight against the corporate greed and the price gouging.”
He was then asked about his change of heart on fracking, which he dismissed as an issue he had with previous environmental regulations, reiterating that he now fully supports it.
The Democratic candidate added that his opponent is a “fraud” who is only “using Pennsylvania.”
Fetterman is in a tight battle with Oz for the open Senate seat in Pennsylvania. Currently, the race is rated as a toss-up by the Cook Political Report. In the most recent polling from Suffolk University and USA Today, Fetterman leads his opponent by 2 points, 47% to Oz’s 45%. The survey included 500 respondents, gathering data between Oct. 27-30. The margin of error is plus or minus 4.4 points.
On Thursday, Oprah Winfrey endorsed Fetterman, explaining that “if I lived in Pennsylvania, I would have already cast my vote for John Fetterman for many reasons.” Notably, Winfrey and Oz have a history, as he regularly appeared on her show before launching his own and she is credited with providing him with a launchpad to fame.
