UPDATE, 6:20 p.m.: Authorities say the body is Delany. His personal items were found nearby, according to the university, and a medical examiner confirmed his identity, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reports. ORIGINAL POST, 10:10 a.m.: A body found in upstate New York this weekend might be a college student from Maryland who was reported missing more than a month ago.
Frederick native and Rochester Institute of Technology junior George Delany, 21, was reported missing March 12. He was last seen at his off-campus apartment.
His family has said he was frustrated with school, but gave no indication that he was going anywhere.
Two hikers found a body in Steuben County on Sunday evening, the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reports. The body has been taken to the medical examiner for an autopsy and identification, New York State Police told the newspaper.
Police scheduled a news conference for Monday to announce more details about the case. The cause and manner of death have not yet been released.
Police and volunteers had canvassed large areas around Delany’s apartment and the wooded lands where his car was found, but had turned up no signs of him. Students had distributed flyers, created a Facebook group and held a rally in efforts to share information about his disappearance.
“I am proud of the way the community came together to support each other during this difficult time,” Mary-Beth Cooper, the university’s senior vice president for student affairs, said in a statement. “Whatever the outcome of this discovery, the community will remain strong and continue to keep George and his family in our thoughts.”
