Democrats want Americans to wear orange for gun violence awareness

More than two dozen House Democrats are urging people to wear orange clothing in early June to promote gun violence awareness.

Rep. Robin Kelly, D-Ill., and several other Democrats introduced a resolution Thursday that supports the designation of June 1 through June 3 as National Gun Violence Awareness Weekend.

The resolution calls on everyone that weekend to “wear orange, the color that hunters wear to show that they are not targets.”

They also want people to bring “heightened attention” to gun violence during the summer months, “when gun violence typically increases,” and find ways to “bring community members and leaders together to discuss ways to make communities safer.”

The resolution states that tens of thousands of people are killed in the U.S. each year from gunfire, including thousands of children.

The resolution was introduced about a week after 10 people were killed, including nine children, at a Texas high school.
