President Trump on Friday signed legislation to make sure that the federal government keeps running as normal, but not for long.
H.J. Res. 99, a so-called continuing resolution, only funds most government operations and services at current levels through next Friday, May 5.
If a budget cannot be agreed upon by then, Congress and the president can either opt to pass another continuing resolution or shut all non-essential aspects of the government down, pending future funding.
An eventual shutdown is not likely. Both the Trump administration and prominent members of Congress have said that they would like to avoid such a disruptive and unpopular impasse.
