A second member of the Baltimore City Council has sent a letter to the FBI, asking its Baltimore chief to reopen the investigation into the controversial 2005 death of businessman Robert Clay.
On Tuesday, Belinda Conaway, D-District 7, sent a letter to William Chase, special agent in charge of the FBI?s Baltimore office.
“I urge you to assist in resolving this case and bring closure for the citizens of Baltimore City as well as the family members of Robert Lee Clay,” Conaway wrote.
Conaway?s letter comes on the heels of a similar missive written Friday by Council Member James Kraft, D-District 1, who said he thought the public testimony at last week?s City Council public safety subcommittee meeting about Clay?s death needed a response.
“These questions and concerns combined with the general discomfort about the investigation evidenced by both members of the Clay family and the general public have convinced me that there must be an independent review of the [police] investigation of Mr. Clay?s death,” Kraft wrote.
Clay was found dead in his Baltimore office in May 2005 with a single gunshot wound to the head.
The state medical examiner ruled his death a suicide, but friends and family have raised questions about the case, including that Clay was right-handed but was shot in the left side of the head.
A spokeswoman for the Baltimore FBI was on leave and could not comment on the case.
