Trump Jr.: Lewandowski no longer of ‘service to the campaign’

Donald Trump Jr., criticized former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski Tuesday for creating problems with the GOP nominee’s team after he blamed his replacement, chairman Paul Manafort, for plagiarism in Melania Trump’s convention speech.

The billionaire’s son criticized Lewandowski, who had said earlier that chairman Paul Manafort was hired in an “amateur hour” move by the campaign leadership.

“I mean listen, I understand, [Lewandowski]’s not here anymore, you wanna try and maintain relevance, you wanna be on TV. I think at this point that’s not a service to the campaign, I think it’s nonsense,” Trump Jr., told CBS Tuesday in an interview that aired on CBS Evening News. “There’s a reason Paul’s in the position he’s in and Corey’s not, and it’s not because Paul’s amateur hour, it has nothing to do with that.”

He said speechwriters were to blame for the mistake.

Trump, Jr. is scheduled to speak Tuesday night at the convention, but is not expected to address the Monday incident. Instead, he will focus on persuading Republicans to support his father in November.

The full interview will air 10 p.m. Tuesday as part of the network’s primetime coverage.
