Paid Obamacare enrollment hits 11 million

A little more than 11 million people paid for their Obamacare plans, with the administration still projecting it will meet its goals by the end of the year.

The administration announced that as of March 31, about 11.1 million paid for health insurance under Obamacare. The administration still believes that it can meet its goal of having 10 million people pay for Obamacare by the end of the year. But that goal is still less than half of the 21 million that the Congressional Budget Office originally projected would be enrolled in 2016.

The figure is below the roughly 12.7 million who signed up for Obamacare during the last open enrollment that ended in January. However, the administration said that it expected some people to not pay for the coverage due to other circumstances such as finding coverage elsewhere or terminating their plans.

It noted that the number of people who have health insurance at the end of March is almost a million more than at that point in time a year ago.

“This increased level of enrollment demonstrates the strength of the Marketplace over time,” said Kevin Counihan, CEO of healthcare.gov, the site used by 38 states for residents to sign up for Obamacare.
