‘If I go, I’m OK’: Terry Bradshaw says his faith grounds him along cancer journey

Former NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw said his Christian faith has grounded him along his cancer journey.

The four-time Super Bowl champion recently revealed he has battled cancer twice in the past year after concerns rose about his health and some suggesting he’s an “embarrassment.”

Bradshaw told Today that he had not previously talked about his cancer journey “because I didn’t want pity.”

“I didn’t talk about it because a lot of celebrities — unfortunately, I’m one of those — when they say this, I think the perception around America with all the millions of people is, ‘Aw, look at him. Bless his heart. He has cancer. Well, my husband died of cancer! My kids are…’” Bradshaw explained. “I didn’t want that. It took a long time before I told my family.”

The former NFL superstar said he wasn’t afraid of his diagnosis, though.

“I don’t know why; I never was scared,” Bradshaw said.

Bradshaw said that cancer shows no favoritism but cited his faith as a source of peace and strength.

“As a man of faith, as a Christian, my attitude was, well, ‘If I go, I’m OK. If I stay, I’m OK.’”

During a Fox NFL Sunday broadcast in October, Bradshaw explained that he had been diagnosed with bladder cancer and had surgery and treatment resulting in being bladder-cancer-free. He also shared that a Merkel cell tumor, a rare form of skin cancer, was detected in his neck.

“Folks, I may not look like my old self, but I feel like my old self,” Bradshaw declared. “I’m cancer-free. I’m feeling great. And over time, I’m going to be back to where I normally am.”
