A person has died after an individual hijacked a Metrobus in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, according to police.
The hijacking of what appears in photos to be a U6 bus took place around 11 a.m. The suspect entered the bus and put a pair of needle-nose pliers to the bus driver’s neck, police said. Though the bus driver soon got off the bus, he suffered a back injury in the process.
While the bus was driven only a short distance — it is now stopped at a gas station at the 4300 block Minnesota Avenue in Northeast Washington after a crash — it caused several accidents along the way. A pedestrian was struck during the crash in the gas station and transported to a nearby hospital with critical injuries, where he was pronounced dead. The bus driver is expected to survive his injury.
Metropolitan Police Chief Cathy Lanier clarified at a press briefing that the hijacker was one adult, not three juveniles as originally reported.
Police say the suspect is in custody, but have not said if any other arrests have been made.
It is also unclear whether any passengers were on the bus at the time of the hijacking.
