Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus on Monday called for an investigation into whether former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton committed perjury by lying under oath about her handling of classified information in her emails.
In an interview with radio host Hugh Hewitt, Priebus argued in favor of a criminal referral by House Republicans to investigate whether Clinton perjured herself when she told the House Select Committee on Benghazi that she never sent or received classified information. FBI Director James Comey told the House Oversight Committee last week that that was not true, as the FBI’s investigation revealed that 110 emails in 52 email chains contained classified material.
“I think that there should be a perjury investigation,” Priebus told Hewitt. “This isn’t going away for Hillary Clinton. James Comey basically told he world that Hillary Clinton is a liar and that she lied the whole way through, and she continues to lie straight-faced to the camera.”
The RNC chair said Clinton also lied about handing over all of her emails, and about using just one private server.
“This isn’t a lie about where you went on vacation,” Priebus continued. “This is a lie about state secrets. It’s extraordinary and it’s not going to go away. We’re not going to let it go away.”
Priebus said Republicans will use earned and paid media to keep Clinton’s lies a topic of conversation, and said Clinton’s honest and trustworthy polling figures as a jumping off point for Republicans to attack.
“People already don’t trust her, so you already have a base to work off of. This is not like you’re running against Mother Teresa,” Priebus said. “You’re running against somebody who people already think is a liar and is dishonest.”
