Maryland State Police are investigating a crash that killed a 2-month-old baby and a Maryland man and injured five Tuesday morning in the northbound lanes of Interstate 83 in Hunt Valley.

No charges have been filed at this time, and alcohol is not believed to be a factor, according to state police.

Ronnel S. Offer, 25, of Galesville, died at the scene, and his infant son Tyler Offer, of Harrisburg, Pa., died at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, according to state police.

Their deaths are among more than 630 lives lost every year in Maryland because of motor-vehicle crashes, according to the Choose Safety for Life campaign, sponsored by the Maryland State Highway Administration.

A 2001 Mazda driven by Tyler?s mother, Erika Braun, 19, of Harrisburg, Pa., was traveling northbound on I-83, south of Belfast Road, when it lost control and struck a guardrail.

The resulting impact caused Cline M. Jones, 24, of Galesville, to be ejected out of the vehicle?s rear window.

The Mazda eventually became disabled on the highway, and Braun and Demarco T. Offer, 21, of Galesville, left the car.

Demarco T. Offer was removing Tyler from the car seat when the car and people nearby were struck by a 2007 Toyota Prius, driven by Joe Y. Nimely, 42, of York, Pa.

Braun was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Sinai Hospital.

At University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore City, Jones and Demarco T. Offer were in critical condition, and Nimley and Celia S. Nimely, 34, of York, Pa., were treated for serious injuries.

Because of the extensive crash scene and the number of people injured, northbound I-83 was closed for 4 1/2 hours.
