Democrats maintain 7-point lead over Republicans in generic House ballot: Poll

Democrats are holding steady in a new Monmouth University poll with a 7-point lead over Republicans in the generic House ballot.

Forty-eight percent of registered voters say they would support a Democrat compared to 41 percent who would vote for the Republican if the election were held today. Democrats held a similar edge in April at 49 to 41 percent. The Democrats’ lead has dropped from double digits earlier this year and the race for the House is seen as 50-50 by most nonpartisan election analysts.

The Monmouth poll also found that 34 percent of the public approve of the tax reform plan passed last December and 41 percent disapprove.

“Public opinion on the Republican lawmakers’ signature accomplishment has never been positive, but potentially growing uncertainty about how American taxpayers will be affected does not seem to be helping the GOP’s prospects for November,” said Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute.

Just 19 percent approve of the job Congress is doing.

The telephone-based poll conducted on June 12-13 has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
