Spring starts with rain and fog in the D.C. area

Today marks the official first day of spring — and rain helped to kick off the new season in the D.C. area.

According to the National Weather Service, scattered showers and thunderstorms were expected today before 10 a.m., then a slight chance of rain is possible after 1 p.m. This morning will also bring patchy fog before 10 a.m.

A house fire in Montgomery County may have been caused by a lightning strike, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Assistant Chief Scott Graham said. No injuries have been reported in the fire.

The inclement weather this morning also caused minor delays on some Metrobus routes.

The high today is expected to reach about 73 degrees — well above the average on today’s date of 57 degrees, according to Weather Service records.

Today isn’t the only day this week that may be rainy. The Weather Service predicts a 20-percent chance of showers on Thursday and a 30-percent chance on Friday.

Wednesday isn’t expected to be rainy, but it is expected to be mostly cloudy, with patchy fog before 8 a.m.
