Nancy Mace and AOC feud on Twitter over Capitol riot experiences: ‘Insurrectionists weren’t in our hallways’

Rep. Nancy Mace and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez traded barbs on social media after Mace disputed the “Squad” member’s retelling of her experience during the Capitol riots last month.

“Hold up,” Mace wrote Thursday morning. “You seem to be triggered by facts so let me be clear: I have not ONCE discounted your experience. It was harrowing for all of us.”

“FACT: Insurrectionists weren’t in our hallways. It’s your eagerness to politicize absolutely ANYTHING that deserves condemnation.”

Ocasio-Cortez revealed this week that she hid in a bathroom in her office on Jan. 6 to stay away from rioters. During her retelling, she also revealed that she is a sexual assault survivor.

“I can tell you that I had a very close encounter where I thought I was going to die,” she said of the riots.

Mace, however, said the rioters were in the Capitol building, not the Cannon building where their offices are located.

“My office is 2 doors down. Insurrectionists never stormed our hallway,” Mace tweeted on Tuesday.

“Wild that @NancyMace is discrediting herself less than 1 mo in office w/ such dishonest attacks. She *went on record* saying she barricaded in fear. @NancyMace who else’s experiences will you minimize? Capitol Police in Longworth? Custodial workers who cleaned up shards of glass?” Ocasio-Cortez said in a Twitter thread.

“But now, in typical @AOC fashion, you’re making this political, even going as far as saying I don’t ‘hear’ victims of assault — ME, of all people. You don’t know my story. SMH. Just stop it,” Mace added on Thursday.

The questioning of the “Squad” member’s story of the riot led to “Alexandria Ocasio-Smollett” trending on Twitter, in reference to actor Jussie Smollett’s claiming in 2019 that he was the victim of a racist attack in Chicago. Police later said that Smollett actually staged the attack.
