Charlottesville counterprotesters who survived car attack get married

A counterprotester who was present at last year’s white supremacist rally that turned deadly in Charlottesville, Va., married one of his fellow demonstrators last weekend.

Marcus Martin and Marissa Blair married last Saturday in Reva, Va. According to the New York Times, Martin pushed Blair out of the way of a car that plowed into counterprotesters during the “Unite the Right” demonstration, killing one person.

Martin can be seen in a Pulitzer-Prize-winning photo in which he is midair after being hit by the vehicle. Both his ankle and leg were broken due to the impact.

According to the Times, the couple had been together since 2016 and were both friends with fellow counter-protester Heather Heyer, who was killed by the car.

The “Unite the Right” rally was organized by white supremacists in protest of the removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee, and the event turned violent when they clashed with counter-protesters.

Trump received an outpouring of criticism last year after he said “both sides” were to blame for the violence.
