Joe Lieberman, Political Kingmaker?

Senator Joe Lieberman is keeping his feet planted firmly in both parties: campaigning for John McCain while donating to his Democratic Senate colleagues:

In his incarnation as a lone wolf, Lieberman has crisscrossed the nation to support the Arizona Republican’s resuscitated and now-thriving bid for the Republican presidential nomination. Still, Lieberman hasn’t forgotten his Democratic friends. Last December, just three days after endorsing McCain, he transferred $100,000 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee… Lieberman is expected to actively campaign for McCain through November and will help both Republican and Democratic congressional candidates in this election cycle, according to the aide.

As far as I have been able to determine, Lieberman has made just two endorsements so far in this election cycle: for John McCain and Senator Susan Collins (R-ME). As the election comes closer, will he campaign for more candidates? His appeal is limited, to be sure. He is radioactive with the Netroots, so Democrats in liberal districts will avoid him. Further, some conservatives will attach little value to his endorsement. But with moderates, conservative Democrats, jewish voters, and others, his endorsement might be quite valuable. One could easily imagine his endorsement being sought by Democrats in conservative states and districts, and by Republicans trying to enhance their appeal to moderate and conservative Democrats. Lieberman is already making Democrats angry by lining up with Republican incumbent Collins, and against Democratic challenger Tom Allen, in one of the year’s most high-profile Senate races. If he chooses, he could wield significant influence in a lot of races this year — for Republicans, for Democrats, or both. It could turn out to be an interesting subtext to the election year.
